AMULET Project Laboratories Visited by Soňa Ehlerová, Member of the Academic Council of the Czech Academy of Sciences

On Friday, 7 November 2025, Dr. Soňa Ehlerová from the Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences visited the J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry of the CAS. She is a member of the Academic Council of the Czech Academy of Sciences. Dr. Ehlerová is dedicated to research in astronomy, focusing on topics such as the interstellar medium, HI supershells, (triggered) star formation, and the structure of the Milky Way.

During her visit, Dr. Ehlerová explored selected laboratories of our institute involved in AMULET projects. In the Gas Phase Ion Chemistry Laboratory, Patrik Španěl introduced her to the principles and real-world applications of mass spectrometry—a technique for extremely precise gas composition analysis. This method finds wide application in areas ranging from semiconductor manufacturing and pharmaceutical quality control to transport safety and disease diagnostics based on breath analysis. In the Nanocatalysis Laboratory (NANOCAT), Štefan Vajda presented the research focus of his team.

Dr. Ehlerová then visited the Low-Dimensional Systems Laboratory, where Jan Plšek explained the preparation process of ultra-clean two-dimensional materials under ultra-high vacuum conditions.

Finally, she visited the facilities where Květoslava Stejskalová leads chemistry courses for pupils and students, as well as the exhibition “The Story of a Drop” about Jaroslav Heyrovský, organized as part of the Week of the Czech Academy of Sciences.
